Sometimes we are asked what is the difference between a babydoll nightie and other types of nightwear. So here is a bit of a clarification which we hope will help. There are all sorts of short nighties. Anything with a hem at or above the knee is a short nightie.Very often the knee or thigh length nightie is described (rightly) as a chemise. It gets a bit more confusing when the hem rises! As a general rule the shorter the garment the more likely it is that it can be described accurately as a baby doll. The typical babydoll nightie has a hem that finishes around the level of the bottom. It is often sold with a matching thong or g string. It may also have a front opening from the bust to the hem. Sometimes the front opening version is called a "fly away". The most consistent feature of this form of nightwear is the empire line design although even this is not a consistent feature and there are many garments described by their manufacturers as a babydoll which are in reality more like a very short chemise. But to explain the empire line feature, this simply means that the nightie is not fitted to the body below the bust or might also be described as high waisted. So, in summary, a baby doll nightie is a very short nightdress most frequently but not always in an empire line design and often sold with a matching thong or g string.
